Hey do you know what's difficult?
Trying to make an entire feast of tiny foods and treats for Someone Special when that Special Someone was using the kitchen for a whole week to make treats for everyone else. Still, they were going to do it! It was going to happen. They could not be stopped. Someone was going to get deeply spoiled on a fancy night just for Her.
Maybe they had to kick her out of the house for a few hours though, or maybe she was conveniently at work? Either way, when it was time for Kyoko to come strolling back through the front door there was a dog already waiting for her.
"Hey." Here was a distraction smooch, don't look at anything. "Close your eyes."

"Hey." Here was a distraction smooch, don't look at anything. "Close your eyes."

But he was gone, and Kyoko was left to turn around in a dazed circle to search her very normal surroundings. It took a moment after her gaze landed on her bed to really understand what was different about it, and even then she didn't fully grasp the significance until she'd stepped over to lift up one of those piles of pink and watch the fabric spill down.
"Oh..."
Her eyes had gone wide, but when she tore them away from the dress to look at the others still waiting for her, tears pricked at the corners of them.
It was a while before Kyoko slipped cautiously out of her room, cheeks matching the soft pink of her dress. She'd just needed a minute or ten before she even dared to try anything on, okay. But she was ready now, it was time to face down what was waiting for her in the living room.

Strings of lights were strung up across the ceiling, happily sparkling away. Paper snowflakes were swaying gently below them, reminiscent of last year's decorations. The kotatsu had a new comforter draped around its legs, a touch more elegant than the last. (Though there was nothing wrong with the first one, which was waiting with all of those glorious hand knit blankets on the couch to make the coziest of couch piles.) There went Bug with a ribbon tied around its stem rolling to wherever it was that Bug needed to be at the moment. (Possibly Kyoko's feet.)
How festive and wintery!

"Oh, welcome!" Welcome, like welcome home? Or welcome to the fancy establishment they've set up? Ah, well, either way, "Sit down, sit down, I'll bring you out something to drink."

She had just gently crouched down to scoop up Bug in her hands when Shinji walked in wearing an actual suit, carrying dishes and talking to her like a waiter. "H-huh?" Had she actually fainted in her room, and all of this now was just a fever dream? "Huh?? Let--let me carry something, that's too much."
no subject
"No can do. Looks like you're already carrying some precious cargo, you better keep a hold of it."
Kai was sweeping into the room hot on Shinji's heels with even more tiny plates. He hadn't been wearing a suit when he'd greeted Kyoko at the door, but he was sporting one now. This guy! The one who had hemmed and hawwed over just wearing a nice jacket before! Here he and Shinji were, just a pair of dapper lads with too many plates.

"You'll be helping out plenty by keeping an eye on Bug, you may as well get comfortable while you do it."
Please! Sit! While the boys begin to set their truly absurd number of plates on the table top of the kotatsu. Burden unloaded, it's time for Shinji to swiftly retreat back to the kitchen for drinks. Sit tight, he won't be too long!

But when Kaito appeared, looking very handsome and definitely not real, Kyoko was too stunned to argue. Orange still in her hands, she trailed after the boys over to the kotatsu, where instead of sitting down as instructed she looked over it dimly.
"... Did... we always have this many plates?" she mumbled, dazed. Truly, where was she supposed to begin? Would someone come find her passed out on the floor in her room soon? What was happening?

Now that his share of delights had been set down, Kai was free to take a moment to really look at the lady of the hour and the choice she'd made. He'd tried not to look directly at her when his arms were still full of things, and boy was he glad he'd gone with that plan. There was nothing to keep him from admiring how nice those soft pinks looked hugging her, or to stop him from sweeping in to press another kiss to her cheek.
"That one was my favorite," he murmured quietly in her ear, pulling back to smile warmly at her. Let him gently direct her to a seat, come on. "Does it fit okay? You make it even prettier."

But before she could launch any questions from that train of thought, Kaito was there to derail her with his kiss and soft words. His favorite... so he really had picked all those dresses himself? He'd actually thought about it enough to prefer one?
"It fits," Kyoko mumbled, still dizzy with questions. He--he knew her size? She made it--
Though she barely noticed, Kaito had gotten her sitting down, which was a good safety move in case she actually did lose consciousness. "You... borrowed the clothes too, right?"

"Tha--" Kyoko swayed a little, but tried to keep herself firm. "That's too much! Please don't spend that much money on me!"

There was no way to give her something thoughtful that he'd done with his own hands like garden gloves or cute little bugs. She could make all of the goodies that he could have possibly thought to try and make. He'd managed to string her together some flowers last year, but that had been the one good idea he'd had.
"Besides, it's your day to get spoiled. You're just gonna have to deal with it."
no subject
"You made me something nice," she insisted, cheeks flushed and tears pricking at her eyes again. "All of this... you and Shinji must have worked so hard. There's no way I could need anything else."

"Thank you," she mumbled, voice thick.

But after another squeeze, she looked down at his shoulder again, and--oh. Oh no!! "--I got it wet!" Happy tear betrayal!! Time to pull back and reach frantically for a napkin. "Aaah, and it's brand new, too!"
no subject
"S'fine, If it can't handle this much it's useless. Don't worry about it."
no subject
"Nice things have to be treated well!" Satisfied that it was dealt with, she moved on to adjusting his collar. "And looking nice on you isn't useless."
no subject
Kai still flushed a little as she dabbed at him. Shinji had probably given him some reassurances, but there was still the feeling that actually this looked pretty silly on him. "If you say so," he said. Don't look at him too long, or you might get the idea that he was shy about it.
Come save him with your gift of drinks, Shinji...!
no subject
But, no, he won't let Kai suffer being fussed over for too long. Here he comes, one penguin adorned with his own green ribbon in tow and carefully balancing three cups of tea in his hands. He sets them down at each of their spots at the kotatsu with a soft, "Here we go," one for everyone, and Kyoko can go ahead and get started if she wants something to distract her from being fussed over for a moment. "I hope you're hungry, there's a lot to get through."
no subject
Especially not when another good, handsome boy was joining them--oh, and a third, too? Look at all these dapper boys. Kyoko wouldn't need any distraction from being fussed over at present, because as soon as Shinji was done setting down all those hot cups of tea she was swooping up to loop her arms around his shoulders. "Shinji...!!" Even if he shied away from attention the whole rest of the evening, she had to make sure she got this in, at the very least. "Really, really, really, really... thank you."
no subject
"Of course," he murmurs, "we really want to make tonight fun for you. If you enjoy it all, I'll be glad."
no subject
"Aaah, I have to eat while it's hot, but... why are there are so many?!"
no subject
It wasn't time to think about that though. It was time for many foods.
"It's a tasting menu! So you get to try lots of stuff." Don't tell him about things coming out one at a time, they didn't know. They just knew about FOOD. So many foods. There were plates of nigiri and sashimi, cups of chawanmushi (with lil carrot flowers), the tiniest okonomiyakis, and more! So much more.
