Hey do you know what's difficult?

Trying to make an entire feast of tiny foods and treats for Someone Special when that Special Someone was using the kitchen for a whole week to make treats for everyone else. Still, they were going to do it! It was going to happen. They could not be stopped. Someone was going to get deeply spoiled on a fancy night just for Her.

Maybe they had to kick her out of the house for a few hours though, or maybe she was conveniently at work? Either way, when it was time for Kyoko to come strolling back through the front door there was a dog already waiting for her.

"Hey." Here was a distraction smooch, don't look at anything. "Close your eyes."

Ah. Kai crouched down next to her, bringing the warm look he was giving her down to her level. "You know it's cuz we wanted to, right? Just like when we got everything set up for Shinji, it was a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun getting this ready for you, too."

With Kaito down there beside her, there was nothing to stop Kyoko from surging forward with a hug as the warmth in her chest overflowed. She couldn't repay him, but she had to let him know somehow, how big her feelings were.

"Thank you," she mumbled, voice thick.

This time Kai knew that wrapping her up tight in his arms was the right thing to do. "The night's just starting, y'know." But he held her close, humming softly into her hair. "Happy birthday," he murmured softer. "Make sure you get Shinji too."

Kyoko nodded into his shoulder, letting out a little mmhm. Both of these boys were going to get as much affection as they could tolerate tonight, never fear.

But after another squeeze, she looked down at his shoulder again, and--oh. Oh no!! "--I got it wet!" Happy tear betrayal!! Time to pull back and reach frantically for a napkin. "Aaah, and it's brand new, too!"

What. No. It's fine! He'll just brush at it with his hand it's fine!

"S'fine, If it can't handle this much it's useless. Don't worry about it."

No, his hand was gonna get shooed away so she could dab at that tiny tear stain herself. Let her do this!!

"Nice things have to be treated well!" Satisfied that it was dealt with, she moved on to adjusting his collar. "And looking nice on you isn't useless."

Nice girls have to be treated well. Hence: this whole night.

Kai still flushed a little as she dabbed at him. Shinji had probably given him some reassurances, but there was still the feeling that actually this looked pretty silly on him. "If you say so," he said. Don't look at him too long, or you might get the idea that he was shy about it.

Come save him with your gift of drinks, Shinji...!

Nice girls deserve to be spoiled, and good boys deserve to admired for their handsomeness. Shinji may have dallied a bit at the kitchen when he heard these exchanges being made, just so the necessary points can be said.

But, no, he won't let Kai suffer being fussed over for too long. Here he comes, one penguin adorned with his own green ribbon in tow and carefully balancing three cups of tea in his hands. He sets them down at each of their spots at the kotatsu with a soft, "Here we go," one for everyone, and Kyoko can go ahead and get started if she wants something to distract her from being fussed over for a moment. "I hope you're hungry, there's a lot to get through."

If Kyoko noticed any hints of shyness, she was tucking them away to treasure later. No teasing this very good, very handsome boy tonight.

Especially not when another good, handsome boy was joining them--oh, and a third, too? Look at all these dapper boys. Kyoko wouldn't need any distraction from being fussed over at present, because as soon as Shinji was done setting down all those hot cups of tea she was swooping up to loop her arms around his shoulders. "Shinji...!!" Even if he shied away from attention the whole rest of the evening, she had to make sure she got this in, at the very least. "Really, really, really, really... thank you."

Oh, one girl, incoming...! This is probably about what Shinji could have expected at the very least, and he's glad that she had the forethought to wait for the drinks to be distributed first. Nobody's nice, fancy clothes are getting ruined tonight if they can avoid it! It all means his hands are free to catch that gratitude, settling carefully around Kyoko's back in a gentle hug.

"Of course," he murmurs, "we really want to make tonight fun for you. If you enjoy it all, I'll be glad."

Shinji gets one more gentle squeeze before Kyoko sets him free, pulling back to beam warmly at him. "You didn't have to go so far, you know," she says, but she's still wearing a bashful smile as she smooths her hands over his shoulders and straightens out his jacket. Turning to include Kaito in her happiness again, she clasps her hands under her chin and looks over the table.

"Aaah, I have to eat while it's hot, but... why are there are so many?!"

A steady smile was waiting for them, warmed by that sweet display between them. Ahh, it really was heartwarming to see. They'd had their hiccups here and there, but he was so incredibly glad that they were still so sweet and affectionate to each other. He could even argue there was even more than before! It was really nice! They really should just also date!! Man!

It wasn't time to think about that though. It was time for many foods.

"It's a tasting menu! So you get to try lots of stuff." Don't tell him about things coming out one at a time, they didn't know. They just knew about FOOD. So many foods. There were plates of nigiri and sashimi, cups of chawanmushi (with lil carrot flowers), the tiniest okonomiyakis, and more! So much more.

Kyoko, at least, was still safe from thoughts of whether she needed an additional boyfriend. Honestly, who could even think about that in the face of such a staggering feast?

"A tasting menu?!" As someone who actually did know how tasting menus were generally supposed to work, Kyoko was in fact very carefully not mentioning that usually they happened in courses. That would just be more work for these boys who had already worked too hard! No!!

"I! I see!! In this situation, I should try to start with the more delicate flavors, so--" Starting with some sashimi, maybe?? "Can I start? Itadakimas??"

Why would she need another boyfriend when she has the best option already locked in? And also so much food to enjoy? All of her needs are already met right here and now.

But yes! A whole tasting menu!! A feast fit for a fancy evening, all for Kyoko. Mini hamburger steaks with tiny fried eggs on top, small servings of mapo tofu... all sorts of delicious looking options to pick from. And at least one of them has a good idea of how tasting menus are supposed to work, not to make her do any extra heavy lifting on her birthday or anything, so Kyoko is free to pick what's first at her discretion.

And, with everything brought out, all that's left is for boys to settle in to their spots at the kotatsu. "Yes! Of course, whatever you'd like, help yourself to."

And settle in they did as Kai beamed at their birthday girl. This talk of starting with delicate flavors first sounded a bit like she knew what was up, but Kai was not going to ask her to elaborate. He would live in his ignorance, with this table full of food that was already here. It was Just As They Planned.

"Yeah, dig in. You've got first dibs."

Get that fish!!

Time to put some fish in her mouth, wow! Wow!!

Though Kyoko had dove into that first bite as soon as the boys gave their approval, clapping a hand to her cheek as delight washed over her, she was quick to shake her head at Kaito. "Don't wait! Delicious food needs to be enjoyed while it's fresh! At the correct temperature!" She turned to Shinji too, equally earnest. "You have to enjoy the fruits of your hard labor!"

Delicious fish! Different kinds of fish from normal, even! Wild. Delicious.

"We will, we will." Do not worry about that! There was probably a good deal of taste-testing going on during their extended cooking session as well, so Shinji's definitely a bit more interested in seeing Kyoko's reactions to everything than he is to digging in right away. He'll take Kyoko's cue of 'more delicate flavors first' and pull some of that sashimi towards himself, offering Kyoko a small, fond smile as he does.

"Just want to make sure you're enjoying it, first."

“Mhmm.” Kai was quick to swoop in and scoop up a delicate slice of fish himself, never fear. Boys would certainly consume this feast with her, there was no doubt about that. “You gotta secure your best pieces.” So that she could continue to make those very charming faces of delight. Kai shot a particularly pleased look at Shinji, since hoho look at the good job they did, and then he grinned at Kyoko brightly.

“We’ll follow your lead.”

"There's no way it isn't all delicious," Kyoko shot back as she claimed another bite of sashimi. So there! No waiting, no fussing over better pieces, only happy eating time now. She was well into another moment of bliss when something she'd noticed before registered again, making her pause, and chew more carefully.

"This is... could it be... did you get something new??"

Oho! Seems like she's noticed!

"Would it really be a proper birthday feast if there weren't some surprises slipped in?" New ingredients, for true decadence.

Kai nodded along. "Mhm. A little somethin', for a treat."

You know just in case there were not enough treats happening already.

It would have been exciting enough if it was just something they felt like getting anyway, just to have around, no special occasion--she'd added some things like that just recently!--but gosh. Jeez. These boys really knew no mercy.

Don't mind her tearing up again as she took another bite, chewing reverently. "Ish rly... delishush..."

Oh yeah, it looks like the new offerings are going over very well. Shinji's smile warms over even more as Kyoko offers her praises - good ingredients really will make the meal all the better!

"Good." That's what's most important, that she thinks it tastes good. They can remake anything later, but having it here for today is absolutely vital for maximum mercilessness. Let's get settled in, then, with some more of that sashimi. Mmmm...!

No one minded the tears at all. She was just going to get a warm touch to her knee. Her enjoyment was what they'd been aiming for, so this was all very welcome. Get overwhelmed by how much they cared on this, one of their favorite holidays.

"Did you see the tiny eggs?" He asked as they enjoyed their fish buffet. Look at those lil hamburg steaks, behold their tiny, tiny eggs! "They're so small!"

Once she'd finished her fish, Kyoko had reached for a cup of chawanmushi, but the food nerd train wasn't ready to stop yet. She'd already been vibrating in anticipation of the hamburger steaks, but now that she looked at them again--

"--Eh? I thought you'd just removed some of the white from an ordinary egg, but... Shinji!" She looked his way, as this was surely his doing. "Q-quail eggs?!"
