Hey do you know what's difficult?
Trying to make an entire feast of tiny foods and treats for Someone Special when that Special Someone was using the kitchen for a whole week to make treats for everyone else. Still, they were going to do it! It was going to happen. They could not be stopped. Someone was going to get deeply spoiled on a fancy night just for Her.
Maybe they had to kick her out of the house for a few hours though, or maybe she was conveniently at work? Either way, when it was time for Kyoko to come strolling back through the front door there was a dog already waiting for her.
"Hey." Here was a distraction smooch, don't look at anything. "Close your eyes."

In any case, all of that was definitely done by the 25th anyway, because she had things to do! Gotta go make sure the last of those treats reached their targets, gotta go attend a cat's Christmas concert, gotta bring the dragon fledglings some sushi.
Gotta come home and be ambushed.
"--Mm??" Thank you for the smooch, she was just gonna blush and sputter right here in the doorway for a minute. "Huh?" Close... her eyes... "But I have to take off my shoes??"
no subject
He flashed a grin at her, reaching out to turn her around. "Then turn around first and take 'em off. But you gotta close your eyes before you go any farther."
no subject
... Oh. Oh? Oh?! Could this be--no, no, don't expect anything, Kyoko!!
Straightening up, Kyoko closed her eyes and turned around, hands curling at her sides. "What--what do I do next?"
no subject
Hopefully it wouldn't come as too much of a surprise when Kai's hands slipped right over hers. "Next, you follow me to an undisclosed destination. No peeking! I'll lead you there."
Just like this, as Kai took a step back and gently pulled her hands. This way now. They'd take it steady down the hall.
no subject
"Is... it far?" she asked after a moment, unable to contain herself even though it was a silly question--really, how far could he possibly take her within the confines of this one house?
no subject
"Not too far." The house wasn't that big after all. They were taking a very straight forward path too, so the general idea of the destination probably wouldn't be secret for all that long. It wasn't the kitchen (though things did smell pretty good near there!). It wasn't the living room. It wouldn't be the greenhouse either.
They were headed towards bedrooms?
no subject
There were some very good smells wafting through the air--confusing ones, though. Kyoko couldn't quite pinpoint what was happening in the kitchen, especially when they kept going right on past it. And the further they went, the antsier she got.
"Can I--can I look yet?"
no subject
They were almost there! There was a pause as Kai opened a door, shuffling around so he could lead her inside the room. It was her room! The boys hadn't done anything super sneaky in there, if you weren't counting the neat(ish)ly folded piles of soft pinks sitting prettily on Kyoko's bed. Those definitely were not there this morning.
"Ok so, you're gonna have a choice. Whenever you're ready, you can come out to the living room, ok? I'm gonna go finish up, so once I close the door you can open your eyes."
Probably none of that was foreboding! Kai gave her hands a squeeze, and then out the door he went to close it with a click.
no subject
But he was gone, and Kyoko was left to turn around in a dazed circle to search her very normal surroundings. It took a moment after her gaze landed on her bed to really understand what was different about it, and even then she didn't fully grasp the significance until she'd stepped over to lift up one of those piles of pink and watch the fabric spill down.
"Oh..."
Her eyes had gone wide, but when she tore them away from the dress to look at the others still waiting for her, tears pricked at the corners of them.
It was a while before Kyoko slipped cautiously out of her room, cheeks matching the soft pink of her dress. She'd just needed a minute or ten before she even dared to try anything on, okay. But she was ready now, it was time to face down what was waiting for her in the living room.

Strings of lights were strung up across the ceiling, happily sparkling away. Paper snowflakes were swaying gently below them, reminiscent of last year's decorations. The kotatsu had a new comforter draped around its legs, a touch more elegant than the last. (Though there was nothing wrong with the first one, which was waiting with all of those glorious hand knit blankets on the couch to make the coziest of couch piles.) There went Bug with a ribbon tied around its stem rolling to wherever it was that Bug needed to be at the moment. (Possibly Kyoko's feet.)
How festive and wintery!
no subject
"Oh, welcome!" Welcome, like welcome home? Or welcome to the fancy establishment they've set up? Ah, well, either way, "Sit down, sit down, I'll bring you out something to drink."
no subject
She had just gently crouched down to scoop up Bug in her hands when Shinji walked in wearing an actual suit, carrying dishes and talking to her like a waiter. "H-huh?" Had she actually fainted in her room, and all of this now was just a fever dream? "Huh?? Let--let me carry something, that's too much."
no subject
"No can do. Looks like you're already carrying some precious cargo, you better keep a hold of it."
Kai was sweeping into the room hot on Shinji's heels with even more tiny plates. He hadn't been wearing a suit when he'd greeted Kyoko at the door, but he was sporting one now. This guy! The one who had hemmed and hawwed over just wearing a nice jacket before! Here he and Shinji were, just a pair of dapper lads with too many plates.

late birthday and holiday from the boy.
Away from where he works with music playing quietly through little phone speakers that make it sound a bit tinny, three little piles sit on the couch, not wrapped because that's a huge hassle and what, is he made of money? Nope, plainly in the open are:
- a stack of three folded offwhite aprons with red stitching and detailing at the ends, and a little art kit for decorating fabrics with markers, paints, and little patches, along with a note suggesting to go wild for the trio.
- a pair of gloves that are warm on the inside and tough on the outside, but not too stiff. Presumably for outdoor work, but honestly Cliff doesn't know shit about gardening or what else Shinji might be doing.
- a set of pins including a smiley face, a face with X's for eyes and it's tongue sticking out, a red star, and a watermelon. Get a little variety in there, Kaito.
...There's also weirdly four rocks and more paints on the table.]
santa cliff :o
But there was a whole other boy in here. Oh!
She'd clapped her hands to her mouth to catch the gasp, but lowered them as she quickly padded over to join him. ]
G-good morning! [ Had Cliff ever had breakfast with them before, actually? ] Are you really hungry? I can make something quickly.
no subject
Just sit. [...Actually, she's probably a better judge of these things.] If you want to help, keep an eye on this, okay? Make sure it doesn't burn to the bottom, stir it around. We want that chunk to dissolve. [Then he can focus on whisking together the masa and water in the bowl he'd prepared.]
no subject
Kyoko blinks a few times, trying to parse both what she's looking at and what is happening right now. ]
This is... soup? [ That seems wrong, though? Cautiously, she prods into the pot with a spoon. If nothing else, she should be capable of not letting it burn. ]
no subject
[He points with his whisk to the mix simmering in front of Kyoko, which along with milk and a broken up pile of what looks like brown sugar, has a whole stick of cinnamon soaking to add flavor.]
It's my girlfriend's favorite, so it's one of the only things I know how to make. If you like it, I can teach you how to make it for the other two.
no subject
Ohh! I've never of it! [ That's pretty exciting! It's not often that she gets to taste something totally new to her here in Havenwell without risking weird side effects. An eager grin gets turned Cliff's way with fresh energy, as she's actually awake now. ] I wanna try it! You don't mind sharing her recipe?
no subject
It's not a special one, or anything... I mean, I learned it from the internet, and then her dad helped me the first time I made it. Besides, I wasn't really sure what else I could get you.
[All the rest of that, that's Christmas stuff. This...is the Kyoko birthday special.]
So the stuff we're boiling down is piloncillo. The reason it's special is because it's unrefined cane sugar. That makes it really rich. [He doesn't know a lot about any of this, but he knows the words he read before!!] The other one I got is masa harina. It's flour that's made out of corn, but I don't remember what else is special about it -- except that they use it to make tamales, too. Atole and tamales are both pretty traditional this time of year. You picked a good time to be born, I guess.
no subject
Kyoko is genuinely very interested in all that explanation into the ingredients, but right now it's overshadowed by sheepishness. She ducks her head a bit, but there's no real attempt to hide the dumb, embarrassed smile on her face. ]
... One of them told you, huh. Kaito or Shinji... [ Not that it's a real secret or anything, but gosh. Who spilled!! ] You didn't have to do anything, you know.
no subject
You don't have to do all the stuff you do for me, either. I'm not stupid, I know you've been making extra for me and leaving out blankets and stuff. [His tone isn't accusatory. It's more like he's commenting on something obvious like the weather.] I don't do things I don't want to do. It's not a big deal.
no subject
[ Even if they don't always actually see him, but you know. Baby steps? ]
no subject
[Losers... He likes visiting, though, so he looks...vaguely pleased?]
Anyway, like I said, it's not a big deal. Once it's all melty, take out the cinnamon stick and I'll put this stuff and a little vanilla in there, too. Then it's just waiting and whisking for a while. Pretty simple, right? The hard part is the ingredients, but if you like it, I'll just bring more over.
