♥ July 2019 Intro Mingle

Welcome sign
July Intro Log

Welcome to Havenwell! The walled city and its robotic inhabitants welcome all of the offworlders to Aellyn. New arrivals are given their tablets and showed to open housing, given tours around the city, and generally helped with settling into their new world. Some robots are more curious than others, more helpful than others, but overall the atmosphere of the city is one of hope and celebration. It is, however, a city that needs some help, and as newcomers wander, they may find that they can do a lot to aid Havenwell in its recovery.

PROMPT I: Temple Jobs
The priests of each temple have a digital bulletin board in front of their temple doors that lists several tasks that each temple is asking of natives and newcomers alike. Havenwell is protected from the worst of the damage outside the walls, but it's still an ancient city and there's always something that needs to be done. Of course, the priests won't ask you to do these things for free, so anyone who wants to join up and complete a task will receive a reward of Dora sent to their bank accounts.

The sudden weather changes sometimes results in localized floods, so businesses and homes are always looking for help cleaning debris and mopping floors. The temples themselves always need a little extra help picking up after the temple animals or cleaning the altars. Some stores need help transporting goods across the city - normally a two person job, pulling carts and wagons. And lately, temples have been asking for help in cleaning up the city square for a "big *wink wink* project" coming soon. The priests won't say more than that, but they will offer payment for anyone willing to keep the square clean. Which may be a little difficult with the influx of new people, maps, and general trash and broken debris everywhere. It may be smart to team up to keep things clean!

PROMPT II: Repli-fails
One thing that new residents might find that needs some help are the food replicators found in each home. They've been unused for so long that issues and trouble were inevitable. People who can fix them are few and far between, however, so until an antiques' maintenance-minded robotic denizen stops by, characters may have to suffer through some glitches. When characters ask for potatoes, they might find blue-flavored toothpaste getting dispensed instead. Or if they ask for 1 carrot, they get 20 hot pink ones instead. Or asking for a drink becomes a never-ending stream of said drink. Or they might not dispense anything that looks like food at all and instead inundate you with vaguely fish-shaped wooden blocks. Good luck, newbies. Even the natives are a little baffled by this one.

Rainbow colored chickens

PROMPT III: Virtual? Reality?
The VR simulation of the month, Petting Zoo, seems to still be pretty popular. Natives are plugging in to pet animals in record numbers and it's encouraged the proprietors of the VR parlors to keep the game a little longer than normal. New arrivals are encouraged to take the VR headsets for a spin to help proprietors gauge how to better adjust them for non-robotic clientele. That said, they'll still ask characters to pay for the experience, just not at a slightly discounted rate if they answer a survey afterwards. Characters will notice that holding hands with someone else during their VR experience significantly improves the quality of the visuals and audio input.

Unfortunately, as with most things in Havenwell, the VR experience doesn't always go as planned. On occasion in the city, glitches happen while residents are plugged in and suddenly that flock of giant pink sheep they were petting? Yeah, they're now manifested in the real world. In and around the entertainment districts, illogically colored sheep, giant house cats, miniature ponies, and - of course - the dreaded aggro rainbow chickens suddenly start appearing in packs. Their images glitch in and out, fuzzing into static in places, but they're very real and very confused about not being in their happy green pastures. Which means they panic, of course, and start running amok. Help the citizens corral these strange beasts until the glitch ends, run away from the now very real flocks of rainbow chickens that want to dogpile you, or simply stand by and watch the chaos occur. It's up to you how you want to help!

PROMPT IV: The Ribbon Games
A couple weeks after everyone has arrived and had time to mostly settle into the weird weather patterns and machinery muck-ups, a notice is plastered across the network:
The citizens of Havenwell wish you well, offworlders! To show our appreciation for your assistance in saving our world, we cordially invite you to participate in an ancient tradition: The Ribbon Games! In the old days, this festival was held as a celebration of joyous events. You have a week to collect as many ribbons as you can from your temple by completing their Ribbon Task. Then, at the end of the week, we are hosting a party in your honor where you can compete to collect ribbons from the other temples to win fabulous prizes! Please visit your deity's temple to find out more and we hope you will join us for the Ribbon Games Party at the end of the week.

With all our gratitude,
The Citizens of Havenwell
Those who choose to participate and head to their deity's temple will find a priest with a sash and a box of ribbons in the colors of your chosen deity. They point to a digital board at their side that lists the task you'll need to complete in order to earn one of these ribbons, and will allow characters to complete a ribbon challenge once a day until the week is over for a total of 7 ribbons if they come each day. You may only earn the ribbon of your assigned deity, so if you are an adherent of Rawna and go to Ainea's temple, even if you complete Ainea's task, you cannot receive her ribbon. The tasks are:
  • Rawna: Give comfort to someone or ease someone's pain within Rawna's temple to receive a shimmering silver ribbon.
  • Ainea: Do an act of kindness or show compassion to someone within Ainea's temple to receive a soft pink and purple ribbon.
  • Diacht: Reveal an honest truth about yourself within Diacht's temple to receive a bold red and white ribbon.
  • Ohma: Learn something new about or from someone within Ohma's temple to receive a delicate blue and gold ribbon.

Once a task is completed, the priest will remove a ribbon from their box and affix it to your clothing. Don't let anyone steal your ribbons! Good luck keeping them safe, offworlders.

Outdoor party space with hanging lights and flowers

PROMPT V: The Fanciest of Welcome Parties
At the end of the month, once the city square is clean and the ribbons have been distributed to participating citizens, the newest residents of Havenwell will wake to the sound of music floating over the city. During the night while people slept, the natives decorated the city with streamers, brightly colored lanterns, and strings of beautiful lights that glow no matter the hour of the day. The natives have decorated themselves, too, and provide the offworlders with clothing and decorations to match. Garishly colored sashes, brilliantly (artificially) plumed hats, skirts and tunics, boas and fake flower leis - just about anything you can imagine, they're wearing. In and around the city square there are long tables of oddly colored finger foods - orange-colored grapes, bright pink meats, blue cheeses and the like are provided along with golden chocolates, fuchsia frosted cupcakes with pink cake underneath, and minty green cookies. The foods might look strange, but at least they mostly taste like they're supposed to. The citizens are trying, they promise.

All around the fountain depicting the four gods in the center of the square, pre-recorded music is playing and the natives are dancing in pairs, groups, and lines. Join them for a dance and they'll happily teach you the local customs, or break out your own moves and share your world's best moves to earn some applause and awkward attempts at recreating them.

The big game of the night is shared by the natives and it's announced halfway through the party. The culmination of the Ribbon Games is a contest to try and collect a set of four ribbons - one from each different god's temple. The rules are simple:
  1. Attach your ribbons to yourself in a clearly visible location.
  2. Tag and hold someone else for more than 1 minute. You can bear hug them, hold their hands, link arms, anything!
  3. After sustaining contact, you can take one of their ribbons. If you aren't the character who initiated contact, you can't take a ribbon.
  4. Gather one of each god's ribbon in order to win a prize!

If you successfully manage to get all four ribbons, a little shower of confetti will burst from your ribbons and a nice little chunk of Dora will be transferred to your account. This can only work once unfortunately, but it's a nice little bonus for your first month in Havenwell! The party continues late into the night and the natives are happy to keep the party going as long as any of the offworlders wish to keep dancing.

As a reminder, please post your character to the Taken Character list and your own information to the Player Contact list as soon as possible. It helps us keep track of our player cap!

If you have any other questions, please ask them in the QUESTION thread below. Feel free to use the CR/Intro Meme to do OOC plotting. Otherwise, welcome to Hugtopia's first mingle log!
hedgehogsdilemma: (As long as the room keeps singin')

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps if he wasn't so wrapped up in his own thoughts, worries, and anxieties, keeping himself from getting too deeply immersed in what's going on around him without detaching completely, maybe he would have been a little quicker to notice someone pointing their attention at him. He doesn't mean to make himself purposefully elusive, but staying as far under the radar as he can manage is absolutely what he's doing. At the same time, that's also mercifully keeping him from being tough to corner.

So, here he is, fluke extraordinaire, Shinji Ikari.

Kai's greeting is met with a startle from Shinji, almost like he hadn't banked on someone approaching him so forwardly. He straightens himself up, pulling his own broom in a little closer in an attempt to tighten up his personal space bubble before stammering out,

"M-me?"

Literally who else would he be talking to??
whenyouneedme: hisogons@twitter (134)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-15 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
There was just the slow and steady rise of Kai’s fantastic eyebrows as he leaned a bit more. Look at them go. Seeing as he’s making the kid even more nervous though, Kai eased himself back a bit to aid in the proximity of personal space bubbles.

“...Uh-huh.”

Indeed, literally who else would he be talking to, Shinji. Rawna? Well, maybe.

hedgehogsdilemma: (You're everything I think I need)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-15 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. Maybe.

As Kai leans back, Shinji relaxes by a couple of degrees. He's still pretty tense, but backing off a little is clearly appreciated.

"Sorry," is he acting odd enough to draw someone's attention? Someone as tough looking as Kai is?? Oh no, this is truly the worst-case scenario. "I'm okay."

Convincing? We'll see. (Doubtful.)
whenyouneedme: (004)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Extremely doubtful.

The kid still looked pretty tense, even if he did relax a little. Kai quietly watched him for a moment before he turned his head a bit, making a motion with his hand towards another part of the temple.

“Wanna see if we can find a dragon?”
hedgehogsdilemma: (For those lives that tear at the seams)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-16 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
"A... dragon?"

The priests at the temple have mentioned them, so it's not an entirely outlandish suggestion, just... an unexpected one. Having the encounter take such a sharp turn to something somewhat adventurous sounding gives him a moment of pause.

He hesitated for another second, glancing down to the broom in Kai's hand. Though, he supposes it might not be too out of the way of doing chores, he probably wouldn't have offered if he was too busy. "I guess, if you want to."
whenyouneedme: (041)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-16 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
“Mhmm.” A dragon. “Let’s go then.”

Even if they had been in the middle of chores, ‘too busy’ didn’t seem like it was a thing that applied anymore. From where Kai was standing, they suddenly had more time to kill than most people knew what to do with. He doubted their new ‘bosses’ would care anyway. In fact they’d probably encourage it? What a nice bonding moment and yadda, yadda, yadda. Whatever.

Talking was easier when you weren’t focused on talking though, and looking for elusive temple dragons was kind of like looking for elusive giant beetles. So! Kai set his broom aside, wandering away from it towards a different part of the temple.

He paused a few steps away, looking over his shoulder to see if Shinji was following or not.
hedgehogsdilemma: (You can tell everybody)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-17 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
A dragon it is then.

After a moment of deliberation, Shinji opts to take his broom with him, just... in case? Just in case. He has his own doubts about anyone getting upset with them for chasing after a distraction for a while, given the general attitude of the city, but the semblance of staying on-task feels a little more... responsible. Like a safe bet to take.

He falls into pace a few feet behind Kai, keeping his steps as soft and quiet as he can manage. If they do find one of the dragons hiding out in the temple, he doesn't want to scare it away. Keeping quiet, however, does mean that he won't be the one to strike up any conversation. Having a casual chat with a stranger has never been something he's particularly good at in the first place, and he's given himself very few opportunities to get any practice in since arriving.
whenyouneedme: (143)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-17 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The quiet doesn’t bother Kai. He’s almost a little grateful for the return to something that he’s honestly more used to. He’d been talking to more strangers here than he ever had in Iruma, which is weird, but it was hard not to for him. It was a city full of people that were all alone, and it was hard for Kai to turn away from that.

Which was the whole reason he was walking along with Shinji now, slipping farther in amongst the columns. At this point the blonde slowed his steps, softening them into quiet similar to Shinji’s. He didn’t even bother to look back at the other boy again, not yet, keeping his eyes peeled above them.

After a few exceedingly quiet minutes, Kai held out his hand behind him. Hang on.
hedgehogsdilemma: (There is no message we're receiving)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-18 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Having a quiet moment like this is nice, and while he would be reluctant to admit as much out loud, having company that can find the same peace in not forcing a conversation is a great comfort. With someone else around, and something specific to focus on, keeping himself from dwelling on the weird situation he's found himself in here, or even everything that's happened to lead him here, becomes that much easier.

So, just a couple of kids, looking for a dragon. Not the most normal of small adventures, but he'll take what he can get.

Keeping his focus toward the walls, further into the temple, and generally away from his immediate surroundings, he doesn't notice Kai's signal right away. After a short beat, he sees it, slowing down a little and turning his line of sight to match Kai's.

"Hm...?"
whenyouneedme: (150)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-19 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
At first it didn’t really seem like there was much there. There were just the dances of sunlight and shadow flickering across the marble, and some of the distant shimmers from the main altar’s prisms. Except it was pretty far for those shimmers to make it here. And that rainbow sheen was certainly moving oddly compared to the way the spackles of light were bouncing and—

and then it was turning eyes towards Kai and Shinji, bright little jewels amongst the cool shadows.
hedgehogsdilemma: (See things the right way up)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-21 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite everything he's seen and experienced through his life, the sight of what looks like the dragon they'd been searching for is kind of amazing...! He lets out a small gasp when it turns to spot them, his own eyes widening a little in surprise.

Though, likely because of his experiences, he's reluctant to make a move from where he's positioned himself behind Kai, opting instead to stay frozen in place and wait to see if the dragon or his own companion would make a move first.
whenyouneedme: (041)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-21 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was just because the dragon was the only one that could see it, but that gasp from behind him got a little smile to cross Kai’s face. There was just enough of that child-like wonder of discovery there. Good, that was a proper reaction to a fledgling dragon.

Kai carefully crept forward a few steps. When he crouched down, there was a little bit of a shimmy from the dragon’s end. It shimmered down the column a bit more, and for a moment there it seemed like this was something familiar. Kai would creep forward a little. The dragon would scuttle down a bit lower. But then those bright eyes were on Shinji again, and a rasp of sound left it’s mouth.

Ah.” The blonde looked behind him at the other boy, beckoning him over with a small motion from his hand. “C’mere.
hedgehogsdilemma: (You're the only song I want to hear)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
So brave, going up to a dragon like that...! Even if it is still young, Shinji's not sure he'd want to try getting closer like that.

But then, suddenly, Shinji's the one being beckoned over. He hasn't moved from where he planted himself, figuring it was a safe enough distance to watch Kai's daring exploits in dragon whispering, and at first he seems incredibly hesitant to change that. He tightens his grip on his broom momentarily as he weighs his options, though curiosity coupled with the relative security of having another person with him wins out quickly enough.

Just like earlier, his steps remain soft and cautious, barely making a sound as he edges closer and closer until he's only a step or two from Kai.
whenyouneedme: (121)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-23 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Was it bravery, or merely stupidity? Truly, it was hard to tell.

Kai was rifling in his pockets when Shinji approached, pulling out a little bundle of something or another. This was perhaps not actually the first time this kind of scenario had played out, if the sudden twist of the dragon’s body was anything to go by. There was a look that was almost ‘interested’ on its face— you know, if you wanted to assume you could read a dragon’s face. Still, it didn’t come that much closer yet, and Kai had a feeling he knew why.

He turned, holding the bundle up for Shinji to see. “It knows I bring snacks.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Somewhere far away from here)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-24 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so this was less of a daring endeavor and more of an expected outcome... it does drain a little of the tension from their adventure, but as it goes, so does some of the feeling of danger. Not that he's about to totally drop his guard when facing down something as unknown as a dragon, but if Kai's come and gone from this sort of encounter before, surely that means he has at least some sort of handle on the situation, he figures.

Maybe even more surprising is the fact that he's managed to get his hands on snacks worthy of sharing with the creatures. Huh...!

Nonetheless, he still sounds largely awestruck when he speaks up again, the wonder of this discovery having clearly not left him. "So, it was probably waiting for you...?" Or, at the very least, waiting for an easy, hassle-free meal.
whenyouneedme: (140)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-24 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, probably not.” It was highly unlikely that the dragon was actually waiting for him. That was putting a little too much importance and uncalled for worthiness on to Kai’s shoulders. “But it knows if it comes out, I’ll give it something. Here.

Kai gave the pouch a little jostle on his palm. “Catch.” And Kai tossed it! In Shinji’s direction!

What was inside? Probably some kind of... meat ? Jerky ? Don’t question it. The dragon didn’t— baby lizard brain was still baby lizard brain, majestic or not.

hedgehogsdilemma: (Come on try a little)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-24 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
!!!

He has to let go of the broom in order to make the catch, simply letting the handle fall gently against his own shoulder. The contents of the pouch are briefly inspected, mercifully without question, before Shinji shifts his attention back to Kai with a mildly puzzled look.

"Did you... want me to try feeding it?"

Is that what's happening now?
whenyouneedme: (112)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-24 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

That’s what’s happening now.

It knows I have food, but it’s waiting to see what you do.
hedgehogsdilemma: (No better and no worse)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Searching out one of the dragons in the temple is one thing, Shinji thinks, but actually making some kind of effort to engage with it wasn't exactly where he thought this adventure would go...! But he's gone along with everything thus far, and after a brief moment of looking between the treats, the dragon, and then once more to Kai, he seems to relent a little.

"Are you sure it's okay?"

One last assurance should give him the push he needs, probably.
whenyouneedme: toniii (086)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-26 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a little tilt of Kai’s head at that. Maybe it was just a play of the light and shadows of the temple, but for a moment there it almost looked like Kai was grinning. Almost.

I’ve lived to tell the tale. ‘Sides, I’ve got your back.

hedgehogsdilemma: (Seek it out)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-27 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's a decent enough vote of confidence at first, though that second comment has Shinji stopping for a moment to let it really sink in. It may just be for a small gesture for this adventure, but it seems to offer him some measure of comfort.

His posture softens by a degree or two, and he crouches slowly in order to set his broom down.

"... Okay."

Time to fish one of those treats out, then. He lets one rest on an open palm, which he carefully extends out toward the dragon. Will the snack be accepted...?
whenyouneedme: (110)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Those glittering eyes had been locked on Shinji the whole while, watching and waiting to see what would come next. Slowly, slowly, it had been slinking down the column to get a closer look. A closer smell. Shinji pulled out a treat, and its shimmery tongue shimmered all over the place.

The treat was all well and good, but it was honestly and truly that soft feeling of comfort that brought Rawna’s little dragon slithering down from it’s perch. If it accepted this treat, perhaps there would be more of that feeling. It slowly crept its way across the marble floor, claws softly clicking as Kai kept a careful eye on it. He’d given his word, after all! So he didn’t want there to be any surpri—

“That was a very good gesture of comfort!!” Said the robopriest that was suddenly descending upon them in a loud way, summoned by this comforting act like a cat that heard the can opener opening something that wasn’t for them.

The dragon? GONE, hissing away into the rafters.

Kai? BACKED UP IN A DEFENSIVE MOTION NEXT TO SHINJI who could have expected this sudden side attack.

Robopriest? Draping a silver ribbon on Kai’s person.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Silver clouds with grey linings)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-27 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OH HOLY-!!

Shinji jumps back and away at the sudden interruption, eyes wide and heart racing as he tries to register what all just happened between Kai, the dragon, and their surprise fourth guest.

Ribbons. It was ribbons that happened. That's. That's swell.

He takes a quick glance back to see what became of the dragon - just in time to see it's shimmering tail slip out of view, back up into the safety of the shadows. He feels his heart sink a little at the sight, so much for that endeavor... Even more than that, having the robopriest announce Kai's ribbon-victory so bluntly feels nothing short of an embarrassing broadcast of his emotions. Whatever comfort he derived from their adventure until now stands no chance against the crushing guilt of being the catalyst for this particular failure!

Once it's clear that they're in no danger of anything other than being thoroughly rattled, Shinji looks back over to Kai. "It - it ran away..." At least no one is going around revoking ribbons for the comfort being a fleeting thing? Silver linings, and all that. "Sorry."
whenyouneedme: (150)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2019-07-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Luckily, the robot didn’t stick around for long. Once it had deposited its victory ribbon it fucked off to parts unknown, possibly to deposit a ribbon on one of the other few followers of Rawna.

There and gone, barely giving Kai anytime to probably huff at it for its interruption. He huffed at the ribbon instead, giving it a somewhat sour look before shoving it in his pocket. Great. Cool. Did he do? Something Comforting? It didn’t feel that way, but whatever. Easing out of the defensive position he’d taken, Kai plopped himself down on his keester to look at Shinji again.

The apology caught him off guard though, prompting him to glance to where the dragon had been. Ah. Kai gave a casual wave of his hand. “S’fine, they do that. Took me a few tries to get them to stay long enough to even know I had food.” A beat. “You ok?”
hedgehogsdilemma: (I guess everything is timing)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2019-07-29 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of hard work, hunting down those remaining three Rawna disciples!

"Ah, yeah. Just... startled, that's all." That's all. Don't worry about it. As far as scares go, that was the mildest one he's had in what feels like a long, long time. That much is comparatively nice, at any rate. He recollects himself, resuming a crouched position - knees drawn halfway to his chest - in response to Kai taking a seat. Whether they call their dragon hunting quest to a close after that, or find themselves simply taking a brief pause before giving it another shot, he is prepared to go, or stay, as needed.

But, until then, what to do? Does he acknowledge that horrifically awkward interruption? Con...gratulate Kai on his cool new Rawna-themed ribbon? He didn't look too thrilled about receiving it, actually, so maybe let's not do that. Give a vaguely forlorn look back at where the dragon had been in an effort to avoid eye-contact? Sure, go with that one for now.

"I... hope it wasn't scared too badly." It'll probably recover within the next time treats are handed out, realistically, but for now he'd hate to think of it growing skittish from being spooked while just trying to get a bite to eat.
