[Closed] Let me tell you something
♥ Who: Shinji and Kaito
♥ Where: Kai's house
♥ When: End of Ohnir
♥ What: Getting some quality zzz's
♥ Rating: PGish? for now, will update accordingly if things change.
About halfway through the month, Kaito had caught Shinji in a pretty poor state sleep-wise, and after strong-arming him into a nap, insisted that he should let Kai know if things got bad again. It's a very nice idea, in theory, though Shinji's not the type to go out of his way to seek help. How much use would he realistically get out of the offer? Well...
For the most part, he can deal with nights of little sleep, just as long as he can get some meaningful rest most nights. However once he found himself on his own once more, that unexplained, unexpected figure started creeping back into his typical dreams and nightmares. As it shows up more and more, Shinji finds himself once again getting less and less substantial sleep, simply becoming a just little too anxious about it. If his inability to calm his nerves enough to relax his exhausted body are any indication, tonight seems like it will be another difficult night. Before it gets to be too late, Shinji, mercifully, makes himself confront this inevitability sleepless night, and what he should be doing about it.
He doesn't want to bother Kai, even if the other assured him that coming over for some rest wouldn't be a hassle. But, if he runs into him again looking as worn down as he feels, he's sure there's no way it wouldn't be cause another fuss. If he at least sends Kai a message, then that pretty much obligates him to show up, no matter how much he might be wavering now. Do that much, and he has no reason to back out. So, that's how, as nighttime overtakes Havenwell, Shinji's otherwise empty and quiet house finds itself a little busier as the boy paces about, staring down his communicator and slowly gathering up the resolve to send out a simple message.
'Are you busy right now?'
And, before he can second-guess himself yet again, he sends it off.

Everyone's bein' so sneaky this morning, sneaking in and out of rooms and sneaking past domesticity. He grinned a bit. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." That's what the knock had been for!
Now he was here and Shinji knew it, so Kai went ahead and shuffled over to get a look at what was happening over here. "Whatcha up to?"
no subject
"I thought I'd make breakfast," simple as that. "The replicator ingredients can be kind of tricky to use, but this usually comes out pretty well."
no subject
"H'ohh. It smells really good."
no subject
"Yeah...?" He sounds... kind of hopeful? That bodes well, right? A good choice on his part? "I'll have it done in just a little bit."
And then, they will eat.
no subject
Kai gave the other boy a considering look out of the corner of his eye. Then-- watch out!-- he reached over for an encore of the Hair Ruffle as he moved behind Shinji to get at the counter. No escape.
"Sounds good. You want coffee or anything?"
no subject
His previous encounter with it taught him nothing. He is unprepared, letting out a small squeak of surprise once it is executed, and quickly smoothing his hair back down once it's over.
Another thing he may have to get used to, huh?
"Coffee... sounds good." He may have even had it in mind to make some once the food was ready, if Kaito hadn't beaten him to it.
no subject
Shinji had sealed his fate.
"You do this kind of thing often? Make breakfast for people?"
no subject
"My last guardian was really bad at cooking." Like. really bad. It feels kind of mean-spirited to be recalling her bad points like this, considering... everything, but it's true!! "I ended up making our meals most days, but I've only been cooking for myself since I got here."
No roommates, no group meals. You're the first one he's gotten to do this for, Kai, how lucky!
no subject
"Lucky me, then," he chuckled. "I'm a big convenience store breakfast guy myself."
And there were. No convenience stores. Yet.
no subject
But it's kind of nice not to have to elaborate on that right away. If it comes up later, he won't be upset or anything, but he'd mostly like to focus on rolling up these eggs without dwelling on things like his upbringing being handed off to other people more than once in his life.
But yeah, hm, no convenience stores here just yet. What did you even do before all omurice and oranges all the time, Kai??
"I could show you how to make some things, if you're interested."
no subject
Let's not talk about how much rice and bland chicken he's consumed.
Kai glanced over at him, watching this careful egg rolling that was taking place. It was a handy set of skills to have, of course, and it was even more glaringly obvious in a world that didn't have all the conveniences of home. It wasn't like any of them were in a position to starve, of course, so that was well and good. Still. It'd be a bit more palatable if things were, well. More palatable.
"Yeah? You'd do that?"
no subject
It's definitely a set of skills that served him well, why not pass some of that knowledge along if it will be helpful? Also perhaps a reason to keep meeting regularly outside of tidying up the temple, without having to rely on the total collapse of Shinji's sleep schedule to do so.

Looking back at the coffee plinking into the cups, Kai hummed a bit. "S'probably a good idea," he said, reaching up to give the replicator a pat. "And it won't be like I'm burning a paycheck to figure it out around here."
no subject
With how much free time many of them are sure to find themselves with here, it's probably as good of a time as any to pick up new skills and hobbies. "You'll have to let me know what kinds of foods you like, and I'll see what I can do."
Obviously, not everything's going to be easy with what they can get from the replicators, but he can do his best to put some simple recipes together based on Kai's tastes.
no subject
"It might be better to choose ones you like making," Kai told him with a soft laugh. "I'm really not picky." He would in fact eat anything presented in front of him. Things like the sweet rolled eggs sizzling in the pan nearby.
"Though... I guess I wouldn't mind some tamagoyaki tips. I can never get 'em to roll."
no subject
"If you think of something you don't like, then." But, if he really isn't that picky, all the better. He just wants to make sure that option is still there, just in case. As for egg pointers, "I can show you how to do it next time."
These ones are just about ready, after all, and we wouldn't want to waste valuable eating time discussing the finer points of rolling eggs. Gently slide these ones out of the pan and let them cool down for just a little, and they'll be all ready to get sliced up.
no subject
Since he had already made attempts at it before, so he wasn't totally clueless, and man this smell sure was distracting. Kai gave the tantalizing roll a look before he moved the steamy mugs over to the table.
"Next time's cool."
Whenever that was. That whole concept was? Kind of new.
"I'll get some bowls."
no subject
"Thank you," while Kai takes care of that, he can finish up the rice, too. Good teamwork, boys!
no subject
Here came some bowls though, deposited carefully by Shinji's side for prime rice scoopage.
Now what. Did he do. Find? Cutlery? Yes!
no subject
It's pretty nice to have a little bit of extra assistance right now, even if it's something as simple as someone dropping bowls off for him to use. Very helpful, Kai! Two bowls of nicely fluffed up rice, coming right up! And shortly after that! Let's slice those eggs! One nice, simple breakfast, ready to consume.
no subject
"Thanks for the food~"

The replicators can't always produce the most authentic flavors in the synthetic ingredients, but Shinji's found that relying a little more on other flavors of things it's a little more reliable for makes for a more normal end product. So, synthetic eggs, real sugar... a downright believable tamagoyaki. He's sure of what it will taste like, having made it for himself before, but how will Kai feel about it?
He may be waiting, a tiny bit expectantly, to see his reaction.
no subject
Kai plopped a bite right into his waiting maw with approximately zero gravitas. There was a thoughtful amount of chewing here. Noticing Shinji hadn't really done much yet, Kai glanced over at him curiously with squirrely cheeks.
Swallowing, he offered up a little grin. "That's pretty good!"
no subject
But, hey! At the praise, a small smile flickers its way across his face.
"Hmm, I'm glad."
With that, he will start eating too.
no subject
That hadn't happened before.
Kai didn't linger on it too long, simply turning back to his food, but ah. That little smile alone was thanks enough for anything. Kai had thought his own smiles were few and far between--and really they had been-- but this guy was something else. He was glad for the little treat.
"Really though, thanks. You didn't have to do anything."
