Kaito and Kyoko had planned. They'd plotted. They'd formed a pact! They'd perfected recipes and toiled away preparing feasts and gifts in secret, and now the promised hour of the promised day had arrived.

It was time to put this kidnapping into motion.

Even as she put the last carrot flowers into place, Kyoko was on high alert for the sounds of a certain birthday boy approaching--like those footsteps falling softly out in the hall. Glancing urgently over at her partner in crime, she hissed, "Kaito! The target! Intercept!!"

Look away all you want, you would never win this battle, Kaito. Kyoko was willing to call you out every day for the rest of your life. Contributions from good boys would be recognized.

Even if that contribution was the simple act of being in their lives. Watching Shinji, that other extremely good boy, Kyoko had to smile some of that warmth right back at him. "We're the ones who wanted to say 'thank you,' though. That's what birthday parties are for, right?"

Kai puffed a little at that nudge, but all it resulted in was another smile turned Shinji's way. Yeah, okay. Fine. Maybe he did a little more than he said for this very good boy beside him.

"That's what I've been led to believe," Kai agreed. "A day for thank you for all the days we've got to have with you."

They never had to put this much effort into it, though! It's enough for Shinji to just let him stay happily by their sides, but he knows that arguing that would be a losing battle, today especially.

It fills his heart with an overwhelmingly warm, fluttery feeling, the very notion that those days would be worth all of this. That him having a nice birthday would be worth it. It really does toe the line of too much to handle, but those warm assurances keep him firmly on the side of simply wanting to appreciate it, hold these efforts close to his heart. They're so good to him... gosh. Gosh!

That nudge from earlier to Kai's arm is upgraded to a very gentle, brief lean from Shinji. "I'm definitely going to come out of today spoiled." Spoiled by good food and good people - let's straighten up and take another serious look at the offerings. "Ah... are these apple rabbits?"

Jeez Shinji, already talking about being spoiled after eating one (1) piece of fried chicken. What's gonna happen when you open your presents? Will you simply expire when you see the cake?

But they can worry about all that when the time comes. Now is the time to beam proudly again. "Yes!! Kaito did a really good job on them, right? They really jump out at you!"

Don't worry Shinji. If it was feeling too much, surely all you had to do was look at your boyfriend who was already flustering again. All of his secrets! Were being revealed! So suddenly! It just kept happening.

"Wanfedemfobecute," was something vaguely resembling words as Kai shoved more shrimp in his mouth.

Yes, he is going to perish. He will die, and my mistake was doing any threads that take place after today because he will be Dead. Oops.

But until then, he can at least admire the cute little fruits and the work put into making them exceptionally charming. One of those bunnies is plucked right out of its compartment so that Shinji can get a closer look at it.

"You did, they're really cute." Who knew Kai was hiding a talent like this? It's not a total surprise, but it's still very much worth admiring.

RIP in pepperonis Shinji, at least you won't have to suffer now.

And Kaito might as well die with him. How fitting, lovers dying together. "Right, right~" Kyoko was nodding a lot, absolutely glowing with obnoxious pride. "You should have seen his intent face when he was making them! The cuteness would definitely knock you out!"

Who could have imagined the fastest way to murder Kaito was to reveal the faces he made while carefully crafting small animals out of fruit. He jabbed an accusing finger in Kyoko's direction.

"Y'just wait and see what she's got in store for you."

"Ah?"

Is it some kind of competition now? Who can be the cutest while... making things? Or does he just mean that she has something exceptionally cute in store to murder him with? He looks between Kai and Kyoko, partially curious about how this will unfold, but also a bit worried about how much the knowledge of this Extra Effort and the cute people doing it might end his life.

For now, though, he will sit back and let this war over who makes cuter faces and/or things unfold without his input. Just gonna nibble that apple bunny. Yum.

Whoa, hey there. What was that about? Kyoko genuinely wasn't sure, actually, but she drew herself up indignantly all the same.

"I didn't make anything as cute as apple bunnies. I didn't even decorate the cake that much!"

It was already well established that birthdays were also just to die. He would help prove this thoroughly in a month.

Kai waggled his finger a bit. "But you made really cute faces while you made it. And the other things!" The things he wouldn't spoil! "They're really cute too!" They didn't even touch on all those cute carrot flowers and orange stars, but possibly because those were a team effort.

Oh wait. Hold on. "Oh. Spoilers, Shinji, there's a cake."

"I... had a feeling." He can pretend to be shocked if you need him to, but getting out of a birthday without a cake seems unlikely.

"I'm sure both of you were very cute," he says evenly, like it isn't a very silly thing to be arguing about in the first place.

Kyoko huffed. "Of course there would be a cake. See, even Shinji, who we were able to surprise despite everything, knows there'll be a cake! It's the natural way of things."

Please do not look at how pink her cheeks just got though. Do not observe her right now. "But I didn't make faces when I was making it!"

Hey just because he wasn't hip on your cake culture, geez.

But oh. Oh she was being observed. Kai leaned in against Shinji, whispering dramatically. "It was like that one, but happy about it."

If Kai got a cake, and Kyoko got ~~two~~ a cake, then Shinji would be a fool to not expect the tradition to continue on his birthday. He'd even gotten a slice on his birthday last year! It's just destined to happen, honestly.

He leans back in return, to catch those very, very secretive whispers better. "Ohhh, I can see it," he nods in agreement. Sorry, Kyoko, you are being Perceived. "Yes, that would be very cute."

They should have given him three cakes to really keep the pattern going. What fools.

But hey. Hey! Hey!! Stop that! "You can't see anything!! There's nothing to see! I'm just peacefully eating a croquette!"

"Uh-huh." Cutely. "Glad you're enjoying it."

"The point is--" Wait was there a point, Kai where were you going with that-- "maybe some cute things happened cuz we were thinking about the cutest person here."

Kyoko's reaction manages to successfully pull out a very small laugh from Shinji, one that would probably last a bit longer if it weren't for Kai's comment. Instead, he ends up nearly choking on one of those laughs. Well done, well done.

"N-no... no, I'm sure it's just because that's how you two are."

Cute people doing cute things. A much more reasonable conclusion to come to, rather than trying to suddenly and incorrectly claim that he's the cutest one here.

Kyoko had taken a big bite right after that remark, squirrel cheeks complementing her pout, but fortunately the fluster faded soon as Kaito went back to teasing the correct person. Yes, thank you, good job.

Swallowing, she shook her head. "As the motivation for all of this, you have to take responsibility. Accept it!"

Kai nodded sagely. "Right. Y'gotta accept it, Shinji. We're all gonna get spoiled and real full and maybe watch some clouds or somethin'. It's a lot of responsibility for sure, but I believe in you."

Well then. If this is how they're going to be about this, Shinji's going to have to tuck the information of 'accept unwarranted claims of cuteness on your birthday' firmly away. Soon enough, he will have his revenge.

For now, he sighs softly, resigned, before giving them a small nod. Okay, okay, he surrenders. "Fine, fine. As long as you two are getting spoiled, too, I guess... I should accept whatever is thrown my way."

"I got spoiled within an inch of my life on my birthday," Kyoko reminded him, between more squirrely bites of croquette. "If you can't even handle hearing how cute you are, what's gonna happen when you open your presents?"

The clear answer was that he was going to die.

Kai chuckled a bit, glancing between them fondly. "C'mon, we already wore him down. We'll get to those eventually."

There's no question, he Will Die.

"Food first, please. Just one thing at a time." He can only take so much murder at once, he barely knows what to do with the mere idea of all of this spoiling. If he gets too much piled on him all at once, he simply would not be able to take it. Popping the rest of this apple bunny into his mouth first, presents... sometime later.

"I was just reminding you! Think about your future a little, even if only within the timeframe one day." Sage advice from someone with mashed potato on her face. "It's all part of growing up."
