Affurgato Mingle: July edition
♥ Who: Open to all
♥ Where: Affurgato
♥ When: This week
♥ What: An open mingle at the restaurant which is... mysteriously celebratory!
♥ Rating: who knows, probably PG/13ish?
Regulars of Affurgato might notice things have spiced up a little bit in the last several days; the decor is a little brighter, the staff more upbeat, and the food, while tasty as ever, is a little different. The restaurant is advertising a summer menu of slow-cooked BBQ sliders, sweet potato fries with honey butter dip, grilled pineapple and watermelon slices, and warm peach cobbler with ice cream. The prices are slightly more premium than usual, but ooh, doesn't it all smell worth it? Newcomers might even get a discount, if the right elf twin gets their bill. But how do you know which one's the right twin? ...Yeah, good luck with that.
For this week, the menu will include two curious additions as well: a Thanksgiving-esque meal including fresh slabs of turkey and stuffing, flavoured with bacon grease, and a slice of rainbow layer cake. The cats are very attentive, especially to recognizably good tippers, and there's a display sign outside the door with a doodle of a binicorn in flashy sunglasses shouting the words "ONE YEAR MORE, NERDS", which might be weird to those who know that Affurgato opened about six months ago. Ah, well.
Also noteworthy is the fact that an actual, tangible magical bicicorn will be running around for the first 45 minutes of every daily shift that the restaurant is open, trying to scoop people up onto his back and deposit them in front of the shop. You're here now, so you might as well get a meal, right? Don't question it.
Come one, come all! Enjoy some good food and the company of your neighbours, maybe visit the elves and see what's up.

Verstael Besithia
He was easy enough to spot enjoying his food. Though he was hardly a party animal, he did think himself a little more socially adept than he might be in reality, and this was potentially an opportunity. One never knew what bit of information they could learn from someone. He spoke with confidence, voice projecting loud and clear as he addressed a passerby.
"I would not have expected a new menu item to draw such attention, but I suppose when one has the market cornered people are bound to be enticed by anything novel."
no subject
One of which he has curled up contentedly in his arms already, eyes lidded and content. He sits down carefully, trying not to jostle it too much as he moves.
no subject
It was so bizarre, people coming here and poking animals. Maybe once, sure. Curiosity was a thing. But why sit around touching animals instead of getting things done?
no subject
...Purrfect.
Though, for him to ask a question like that... "Have you even pet one before?"
no subject
"Why would I do that?"
Genuine confusion marred his face. Already being disconnected from normal feelings, and on top of that never having a pet nor anything like it, he knew of pets but he didn't get the point. Not unless they served a purpose, like mousing or riding. All he could do was attempt to find a scientific reason for petting cats.
"Is there something unusual about their texture?"
no subject
Seriously, where is this man's sense of adventure? It's not even like petting a cat takes that much effort. Takes no more energy than lifting food up to your mouth. You can even do both at once. He gestures down at the sleepy creature in his lap.
"Just try it."
no subject
But, then he neatly pulled at the glove on his right hand and slipped it off, setting it perfectly straight on the table in front of himself before reaching over. One would think he'd never touched a cat before by the unusual hesitation, despite some curiosity. They'd probably be right. He had no reason to ever bother.
He treated it much like a wild beast that might attack, tips of his fingers lightly touching the side, and confusion still apparent on his face.
no subject
"No, no- here-" He grabs Verstael's hand and moves it under the cat's chin. "Scratch here, gentle but firm. They don't like it if you're too soft about it."
no subject
"Why am I doing this?"
He needed an explanation. What was he supposed to find under the cat's chin?
no subject
The cat, who'd been purring since Noctis sat down, is rumbling contentedly against Verstael's fingers, eyes closed.

What was he supposed to take from this?
Pulling his hand back, he slipped the glove back on to it.
"It is intriguing how an creature from another planet can be so similar to a species present on our own star. The mandible feels to be the same as a standard cat."

Prompto pauses by Verstael's table, though it quickly becomes apparent it's not to stop and have a conversation. He looks around, then ducks down to look under the table. After a moment, he rises up and settles into a seat nearby, one of the cafe cats gathered up in his arms.
"I mean, you're not here for the kitties, are you?"
no subject
Preposterous, coming to a cat cafe for cats. He just wanted non-native food. Prompto and his friend were so strange.
Which was looking pretty darn delicious on his plate. Sliders and wine - what could be better?
"The mind needs sufficient protein for healthy maintenance." Which there appeared to be plenty of in his slightly-bigger slider. He picked it up for another bite. "The flavor is an excellent bonus."
He followed that up with a satisfying, crisp crunch.
no subject
Granted, he was, like, a tiny tot, but he definitely remembers something about the cats.
When his own order arrives, it is anything but sufficient protein for healthy maintenance. He almost always orders an affogato - extra sweet - since the first time he'd tried one here, and today is no exception.
Making an assumption here about how it ended
"Not much. Unfortunately, you didn't come with me when I needed to leave."
Because that was what Prompto meant, right?
"I did, however, acquire a surplus of other samples that I can test."
no subject
What did that have to do with cats? And also...what?
"Samples to test?"
no subject
"Yes! Despite not getting your samples, I still managed to obtain a variety. Saliva, skin, hair, blood, urine, semen..."
He listed them off quickly and readily, full of excitement at the prospects. "There must be something within that explains how the aging process can be reversed. Just think of the possibilities!"
no subject
Prompto pulls the cat closer and recoils in his seat. There's people all around, so he doesn't yell. But his tone his sharp, and offended.
"That's why you wanted me to leave with you?"
no subject
Why be offended? It all made perfect sense to him. He didn't look at all apologetic, and definitely didn't seem to think anything was wrong with it.
no subject
no subject
The potential discovery was far too big. Surely Prompto could see that? "The process would have been no more traumatic than a regular trip to the doctor."

He leaned towards Prompto, almost lost on where to begin. It was like attempting to explain the importance of language - it seemed so self-evident that it was unusual to have to spell it out. Prompto would have to agree if he understood.
"Don't you understand the significance of this research?"
