Who: Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII & OPEN
Where: Ainea's Temple, Valeo, the House + one Network prompt
When: Late on the 5th and the week or so after his awakening.
What: Regis is awake, but his sleep was just a little different than Cor's was...
Rating: PG/PG-13

Ainea's Temple: Awakening (Closed to the Watch Crew/Starts with Noctis) - Where's my mother's open arms?

[Regis doesn't remember going to sleep. In fact, he very vividly remembers being in his office sorting through a last bit of paperwork and expecting Clarus to look in at any moment to make sure he is actually going to bed afterward. Perhaps a stop by Noctis' room beforehand, but then to bed. No more work. No more avoiding an empty room.

It really doesn't seem as if three years have passed since Aulea left them. The pain is as fresh as ever and the chill of their once shared room just as cold. Perhaps he should really more seriously consider changing rooms despite the trouble it would cause. Maybe something even closer to Noctis' room?

Ah, but it's not his office he awakes from sleeping in. Instead, it's a bed in a...temple?

Regis starts as memory crashes over him and in doing so, his hand lands on the shoulder of a figure that is bent over the bed, sound asleep. At first, all he can do is smile sadly, before reaching up to gently brush a hand over his son's hair.]

Noctis.

[There is regret in the soft chuckle that follows.]

It seems everyone was correct when they said children grow up far too quickly.

Valeo: Evening (Open)
- Where's my father's lion heart?

[Regis hums softly as he rearranges the potion bottles in this particular cabinet for the fifth, perhaps, sixth time? He's lost track honestly, just finding new patterns to keep his hands and mind busy. There is really no point to it all. A potion is a potion even if the bottle's shape is a little different. This one taller. This one rounder. This one shaped, well, just a bit like a chocobo chick if one squints.

Okay, there is a point. The point is, he and Cor wanted to have this shop going last month, and yet here the doors have not even opened because of Cor growing ill, then himself, and then...

What kind of fortune was it that he changed so and then came back when others just vanished?

Regis sighs and carefully shuts the door on the cabinet as to not jar the glass panels. He then turns to the counter behind him and picks up one more potion bottle. This one is a little different from the others. The glass is thicker and colored a deep purple. He turns it over in his hand for a moment before speaking quietly.]

I certainly hope these are not the changes you were hinting at.

The House: During the Week (Open)
- It's like the sun's gone down

[With such a nice backyard and with the kind of people who live in the house that is attached to it, there is little wonder that it gets used as a training space now and again. Of course, the training that is going on right now is quite a bit different than what one might normally consider training. For one thing, the person training is usually holding onto their weapon, not having it float a short distance in front of them, ready for battle, held by an invisible hand.

It's only been five years since he faced down the threats to his city on Founder's Day and already Regis knows the prime of his strength has come and gone. Physically, at least. Now, as odd as it seems, it is easier to wield his sword with the force of his magic behind it than hold it with his own hands and that means learning yet another battle style.

It's like a dance really. Regis has his eyes closed forcing himself to fully rely on his magic and what it tells him about the sword's position. That information he uses to make the sword mirror the actions he makes with his own empty hand. Thrust here. Parry there. There still needs to be precision. Absolute control. Even more than he used in that battle five years ago.

It's a good way to be productive and keep his mind focused on the things he can change and not the things he cannot.]

Network: Video (Open) - Sleeps in the hallowed ground now

[For all the effort that Regis puts into smiling, his smile is a brittle thing, tinged with sadness. Of course, even if his smile was 'normal' it would be immediately obvious something besides a mere sleep happened while he was at Ainea's temple. He looks worn now and older than this 33 years would suggest.]

I wanted to thank everyone who helped out my family and friends while I was gone.

[There is a slight hesitation before he speaks that last word during which he folds his hands in front of himself. Those who met him before and are quick of eye may notice that he is no longer wearing his wedding ring. Instead, in its place, is the Ring of the Lucii which used to rest on his other hand.]

And for those of you who knew what was to come? Words cannot express how grateful I am to you that you said nothing. You are right. I do not believe I could have lived through that twice.

[The message ends there with no further explanation as to what he is specifically speaking of.]

[If he noticed, it did nothing to deter him. Bright eyed and bushy-tailed, he went straight to the counter. It made a good spot to set down his work and write, after all.]

About your experience while being unconscious. I've no doubt that you have noticed you've undergone some changes. I would like to know if you were aware of anything during that time.

[The documents obviously had notes about Regis himself were he to look. Verstael certainly wasn't trying to tactfully keep them from him - but this was a guy who left journals about Ardyn around for him to find and peruse at will.]

[Not the answer he expected. It didn't seem to have anything to do with the subject at hand, but it did wipe the eager smile off Verstael's face. It might be in his future but, of course, he's read all of his files closely. They were troubling, but he didn't have the same sort of reaction the others did to it. He grew solemn, reflective, but not angry.]

You speak of M.E. 723-III-11th. You have been conversing with the soldier about it?

[He wouldn't be too surprised. The soldier had been quite upset that he'd had an interest in Will. He probably lashed out angrily and spread ill will towards him.]

Yes, I have read of it. But what does it have to do with your illness?

[He tensed, wary of an attack with a slight move of his arm to prepare to defend himself. When it didn't come, he allowed his hand to rest again on the counter, keeping a keen eye on Regis. With a silent glare he took Regis' scolding, saying nothing in return. He absolutely believed that Regis might harm him given the opportunity. Hardened as he might be, the idea was still disquieting and kept him alert.

It was much easier, then, when Regis continued on to speak of the attack. His mind readily scanned what he knew of the timeline.]

M.E... 734.

[Jumping quite a bit into his future, that was.]

Five years?

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-03-20 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
...I have little information regarding those years.

[After all, the majority of his information revolved around Niflheim. Things were in the works, but no major events in particular occurred during the time for him. He recalled what he could of the scarce details.]

Rebuilding efforts, then? ...Your son is born, is he not?
original_is_best: (Hmm?)

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-03-24 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. And he has provided my journals to me.

[Something that made far more sense to Verstael. The dates, the procedures, the analysis... He had a preference for that. Impassioned moral judgments he tended to brush aside.

So that verified two things for him. After a brief silence, he continued.]

I suppose that congratulations are in order.

[Though he wasn't one to normally congratulate the enemy king, circumstances were unusual here.]

[He actually gave a thoughtful look. Slightly perturbed, since it sounded a bit familiar.]

She has passed?

[Certainly they had their spies and all, but his ability to know about the future has been limited by what people talk about. Noctis' mother hadn't been the subject of many conversations.]

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-04-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
[A moment of silence. Given their positions, it was unlikely either of them imagined they would ever meet each other. Talk to each other. Much less confide anything. This wasn't exactly a scenario that Verstael had ever imagined being in during his life, and so speaking to a man whose death he had sought - nothing personal, just business - and feeling rather... perhaps 'understanding' was the best word for it, was more than a little strange. There wasn't much of a guide out there for handling this situation.

Then, somberly.]

Then, I suppose... Condolences are in order.

[And it would seem he was going to leave it at that. He was reluctant to say more, though more came to mind, protective as he was of his home. It was easier to put up a wall between himself and the Lucians, to be assured that he wouldn't give them anything that could harm Niflheim.

And yet...

Well, they had spoken of peace at times. Almost a pipe dream. But it would be nice. Eyes down on the counter for a moment, he spoke cheerlessly.]

It would seem... that you and His Radiance share something unfortunate in common.

It is now, for me.

[The loss was so recent they were still very much going through it.]

It is tragic. It should have been a time of great joy, with the birth of his son, but it has been overshadowed by the loss of Her Imperial Majesty.

[Still there was much respect in his tone. His hand raised slightly as he spoke, emphasizing his speech as he often did, but sunk again to the counter as he continued.]

I had always thought that he simply needed time to mourn and everything would return to normal. [Harsh or, perhaps, a bit naive. He had always moved on from his own losses, after all.] Reading of the future has left me second guessing that presumption.

[With a slight shrug he lifted a hand almost as if giving up.]

I have never married, I cannot profess to know.

[It was hard to imagine having that sort of relationship. He'd never really tried, since soldiers tended to have short lives anyway.]

Your son had suggested that I encourage him to spend more time with his infant son.

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-05-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.

[He listened, and thoughtfully went over it. This was out of his realm of experience, but he would have to find a way to navigate the situation if he were to find himself back at home.]

And your advice would be?
original_is_best: (Uncertain)

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-05-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[For his part he did listen. He was not the person for this. They all knew that. Even he knew that - he never cared to be a counselor or anything of the sort. But that didn't mean he didn't care. He cared about his Emperor. And he cared about his country. Both were in grave danger.

How unfortunate, then, that changing their fates might rely on Verstael's social skills.

He finally let out a deep sigh.]

This was all so much simpler when all I needed to do was feed the country or cure an ancient plague.

[That stuff he could work enthusiastically on all day. The fact that he was the only one from his country here to even take on this task was just more proof of how poorly the gods treated Niflheim.

He straightened himself slightly, folding his arms instead.]

I had considered those around him.

[Politicians, many of them. Nobility. Crowds Verstael never cared for as a whole, but he left them to do their nonsense politics while he did his own work.

Not all were evil. He knew that. Like with everything, there were those with good intentions and those with bad. Yet it was so easy to think of those who would linger around waiting for their opportunity.]

Sabertusks. [He hissed disdainfully. A fitting enough analogy considering the legend.] I may need to separate some of them from him.

[He quirked a brow, on the other hand, at Regis' analogy. It was a strange one to be sure. But, after some thought, it got the point across. So the Emperor felt as if he had lost everything, and he needed to see that something was still there.

But, for him, this was all so vague sometimes. He shifted in his place, looking directly at Regis.]

So were you to remind him of such a thing, what words would you use?

[Because it was all well and good to talk about it, but what the hell was he supposed to say to the Emperor?]
original_is_best: (Curious)

[personal profile] original_is_best 2020-05-22 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have considered the risks to myself.

[Many of his new undertakings would be extremely dangerous. If he were to be successful, he needed to maneuver through them all.]

The nursery attendants... Yes. Many of them assisted with raising His Radiance himself. Their words would have more influence than their status would imply.

[They were from important families, no doubt, but often overlooked in favor of more prominent figures.] They would be excellent allies. ...I could send a gift, and perhaps open up a dialogue that way.

[He never had any reason to become acquainted with the infant's attendants. Their roles were very separate. But, simply inquiring about and sending well wishes to the new prince shouldn't draw any suspicion.] The majority of them would have the well-being of His Radiance and his son at their forefront of their minds.

[Sometimes it was really obvious who he respected and who he didn't. Those in the nursery were like the Empire's equivalent of Jared Hester. Mostly overlooked yet highly regarded when thought of. He met Regis' eyes as he glanced up from his pondering.]

That is a very valuable idea. I am grateful for it.

[Not all worthy of praise need be scientists.]

Yes... I will seek them out. Those who raised His Radiance will be of solid character.

[That gave him a lot more confidence. Balancing this on his own was treacherous. With good allies, it became much more manageable. Thoughtful expression on his face, he glanced away as he considered it, then, with a soft nod, looked back.]

We were speaking of the years you experienced whilst asleep. What else has come to pass?
