[Could Magolor have done this over the network? Of course. Maybe people would have appreciated that more. But that's not how he chooses to go about this: over the network, he'll be easier to ignore, and that's no good. And over the network, he can't give anyone any earnest handshakes or touches on the shoulder to contribute to his bank account, I mean, the wellbeing of this planet! Praise Diacht!

So instead of ringing up the populace to ask for their input, he's doing this old-school.

Upon leaving their houses today, anytime between midmorning and late afternoon, any character is subject to being hunted down and approached by a perky little hovering alien with a clipboard and pen in his hands. He's pretty fast in waving people down, and pretty relentless:]

Helloooooo~! Won't you spare me just a moment? I promise not to keep you! You'll be glad you did. This is for the good of our community, and I can't do it without your help!

[He at least sounds and looks very earnest about this, like a bright-eyed canvasser on their first day on the streets.

Or maybe it's something else. Maybe you've seen him lurking out there for hours now and want to give him an earful, or like, a snack or something, which would be much appreciated. Maybe you have some bone to pick with him. The world is your oyster! He sure is making himself obnoxiously visible.]

[He can't help but jab a little, following it up with a friendly wink. And a glance at the wings. It's not easy to surprise Magolor, but that is a new body construction he's never seen before. Interesting . . . ]

Actually, I really am extra glad to hear from you. You're not human, are you?

[ reyson cocks his head, bird-like. ]

I am not. I am a species known as the lagus. Animal-shifters, some may call us.

[Magolor echoes him unthinkingly, tilting. Animal-shifters . . . ]

I'm curious, but I'll get back to that. Tell me all about it after you tell me all about this, okay? What I'm looking for is feedback for our hosts on this planet from the living people like us who've been brought in. It's obvious they're in a little over their metallic heads, right?

[ hmm. reyson eyes magolor before responding. ]

It's true the task set before us is rather daunting and I do not fully grasp how they expect us to do it. But how would such an opinion help?

Well, think about it this way. Don't they need the help just as much as we do? If it were your planet playing host to a bunch of aliens who don't live the same way you do, you'd be at a loss as to how to make them comfortable too. I know I would be! Things like the replicators, the VR system, the prepared food. All of that happens because they don't know how to deal with us yet, right? My goal is to teach them! But I'd be a pretty crappy teacher if I only took my own complaints in with me. That's why I'm here today!

[He gestures expansively as he gives that little spiel, with his pen hand, and the steady, honest eye contact of a good spokesperson.]

You want to teach them about us?

Or something else?

Both! I want to bridge the gap that exists between us now, to make it easier on everyone who's going to be living this way for a while. That means us and them both. So I'm starting with teaching them about our needs and challenges. Get it?

[ he nods. ]

What other feedback do you require?

Right now, I'm just looking for people to complain. Who doesn't like that, right? Hehehe! Don't worry, I'm not going to hand them anything rude. I just need to know what would make your life easier on this planet, speaking as an organic lifeform! The more data I gather, the better.

Hmm. I suppose it would be nicer to have more greenery. I'm not used to metal buildings and cemented paths.

[He makes a note on his clipboard, diligent.]

You're not the only person I know concerned about that. I am a little surprised it's the first thing you thought of, but hey, that's the point of research! I wouldn't have thought of it myself.

[ he shakes his head. ]

My world has none of those things and certain environments aren't conducive to my kind.

That's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to know. For a formal sort of guy, you really are a help!

[He titters as he jots that down too. So this guy isn't just "a human with wings"—he'd said as much, but the lines between culture and physiology can be hard to draw.]

So you're saying it's unhealthy for you to be away from nature?

Correct. Herons are directly linked to nature. What happens to it, happens to us. We fall ill when there is little of it around.

[He takes down that too. Geez. Food is pressing enough; this seems even moreso.]

All right, got it. So how are you handling that right now? Haunting the gardens?

[ he shrugs, wings flapping unconsciously. ]

It is not terrible, though I am a bit more used to uncomfortable environments. I used to do my part in a war.

[This he doesn't write down; he only looks up from his notepad curiously.]

Still, there's no reason to suffer through that again in a peaceful place like this, right? We're pretty lucky here so far on that front.

[ reyson nods. ]

Still, I do not mind. I am strong enough.

[ this is a lie, a weighted feather could knock reyson out. ]

So should I write that down? "Mr. Stoic doesn't need aaaanything from you! He may be sick, but he's doing just fine!"

[He giggles behind his scarf, pen poised.]

[ reyson huffs, wings flaring. ]

I am not sick!

[He pretends to write that down:]

He falls ill and it isn't conducive to his kind, but he's also fine and not sick, got it . . .

[But then he laughs again, hand to his mouth.]

Hehe, just kidding. But it's a good thing I'm here to try doing you a favor, because you seem like the type who doesn't do any for yourself.

I could have sworn most of that came out of your mouth! But you know, it's been a long day. I'm working hard without a break . . . I could be hearing things.

I merely have other things to care about. I rather be productive.
