♥ July 2019 Intro Mingle

Welcome sign
July Intro Log

Welcome to Havenwell! The walled city and its robotic inhabitants welcome all of the offworlders to Aellyn. New arrivals are given their tablets and showed to open housing, given tours around the city, and generally helped with settling into their new world. Some robots are more curious than others, more helpful than others, but overall the atmosphere of the city is one of hope and celebration. It is, however, a city that needs some help, and as newcomers wander, they may find that they can do a lot to aid Havenwell in its recovery.

PROMPT I: Temple Jobs
The priests of each temple have a digital bulletin board in front of their temple doors that lists several tasks that each temple is asking of natives and newcomers alike. Havenwell is protected from the worst of the damage outside the walls, but it's still an ancient city and there's always something that needs to be done. Of course, the priests won't ask you to do these things for free, so anyone who wants to join up and complete a task will receive a reward of Dora sent to their bank accounts.

The sudden weather changes sometimes results in localized floods, so businesses and homes are always looking for help cleaning debris and mopping floors. The temples themselves always need a little extra help picking up after the temple animals or cleaning the altars. Some stores need help transporting goods across the city - normally a two person job, pulling carts and wagons. And lately, temples have been asking for help in cleaning up the city square for a "big *wink wink* project" coming soon. The priests won't say more than that, but they will offer payment for anyone willing to keep the square clean. Which may be a little difficult with the influx of new people, maps, and general trash and broken debris everywhere. It may be smart to team up to keep things clean!

PROMPT II: Repli-fails
One thing that new residents might find that needs some help are the food replicators found in each home. They've been unused for so long that issues and trouble were inevitable. People who can fix them are few and far between, however, so until an antiques' maintenance-minded robotic denizen stops by, characters may have to suffer through some glitches. When characters ask for potatoes, they might find blue-flavored toothpaste getting dispensed instead. Or if they ask for 1 carrot, they get 20 hot pink ones instead. Or asking for a drink becomes a never-ending stream of said drink. Or they might not dispense anything that looks like food at all and instead inundate you with vaguely fish-shaped wooden blocks. Good luck, newbies. Even the natives are a little baffled by this one.

Rainbow colored chickens

PROMPT III: Virtual? Reality?
The VR simulation of the month, Petting Zoo, seems to still be pretty popular. Natives are plugging in to pet animals in record numbers and it's encouraged the proprietors of the VR parlors to keep the game a little longer than normal. New arrivals are encouraged to take the VR headsets for a spin to help proprietors gauge how to better adjust them for non-robotic clientele. That said, they'll still ask characters to pay for the experience, just not at a slightly discounted rate if they answer a survey afterwards. Characters will notice that holding hands with someone else during their VR experience significantly improves the quality of the visuals and audio input.

Unfortunately, as with most things in Havenwell, the VR experience doesn't always go as planned. On occasion in the city, glitches happen while residents are plugged in and suddenly that flock of giant pink sheep they were petting? Yeah, they're now manifested in the real world. In and around the entertainment districts, illogically colored sheep, giant house cats, miniature ponies, and - of course - the dreaded aggro rainbow chickens suddenly start appearing in packs. Their images glitch in and out, fuzzing into static in places, but they're very real and very confused about not being in their happy green pastures. Which means they panic, of course, and start running amok. Help the citizens corral these strange beasts until the glitch ends, run away from the now very real flocks of rainbow chickens that want to dogpile you, or simply stand by and watch the chaos occur. It's up to you how you want to help!

PROMPT IV: The Ribbon Games
A couple weeks after everyone has arrived and had time to mostly settle into the weird weather patterns and machinery muck-ups, a notice is plastered across the network:
The citizens of Havenwell wish you well, offworlders! To show our appreciation for your assistance in saving our world, we cordially invite you to participate in an ancient tradition: The Ribbon Games! In the old days, this festival was held as a celebration of joyous events. You have a week to collect as many ribbons as you can from your temple by completing their Ribbon Task. Then, at the end of the week, we are hosting a party in your honor where you can compete to collect ribbons from the other temples to win fabulous prizes! Please visit your deity's temple to find out more and we hope you will join us for the Ribbon Games Party at the end of the week.

With all our gratitude,
The Citizens of Havenwell
Those who choose to participate and head to their deity's temple will find a priest with a sash and a box of ribbons in the colors of your chosen deity. They point to a digital board at their side that lists the task you'll need to complete in order to earn one of these ribbons, and will allow characters to complete a ribbon challenge once a day until the week is over for a total of 7 ribbons if they come each day. You may only earn the ribbon of your assigned deity, so if you are an adherent of Rawna and go to Ainea's temple, even if you complete Ainea's task, you cannot receive her ribbon. The tasks are:
  • Rawna: Give comfort to someone or ease someone's pain within Rawna's temple to receive a shimmering silver ribbon.
  • Ainea: Do an act of kindness or show compassion to someone within Ainea's temple to receive a soft pink and purple ribbon.
  • Diacht: Reveal an honest truth about yourself within Diacht's temple to receive a bold red and white ribbon.
  • Ohma: Learn something new about or from someone within Ohma's temple to receive a delicate blue and gold ribbon.

Once a task is completed, the priest will remove a ribbon from their box and affix it to your clothing. Don't let anyone steal your ribbons! Good luck keeping them safe, offworlders.

Outdoor party space with hanging lights and flowers

PROMPT V: The Fanciest of Welcome Parties
At the end of the month, once the city square is clean and the ribbons have been distributed to participating citizens, the newest residents of Havenwell will wake to the sound of music floating over the city. During the night while people slept, the natives decorated the city with streamers, brightly colored lanterns, and strings of beautiful lights that glow no matter the hour of the day. The natives have decorated themselves, too, and provide the offworlders with clothing and decorations to match. Garishly colored sashes, brilliantly (artificially) plumed hats, skirts and tunics, boas and fake flower leis - just about anything you can imagine, they're wearing. In and around the city square there are long tables of oddly colored finger foods - orange-colored grapes, bright pink meats, blue cheeses and the like are provided along with golden chocolates, fuchsia frosted cupcakes with pink cake underneath, and minty green cookies. The foods might look strange, but at least they mostly taste like they're supposed to. The citizens are trying, they promise.

All around the fountain depicting the four gods in the center of the square, pre-recorded music is playing and the natives are dancing in pairs, groups, and lines. Join them for a dance and they'll happily teach you the local customs, or break out your own moves and share your world's best moves to earn some applause and awkward attempts at recreating them.

The big game of the night is shared by the natives and it's announced halfway through the party. The culmination of the Ribbon Games is a contest to try and collect a set of four ribbons - one from each different god's temple. The rules are simple:
  1. Attach your ribbons to yourself in a clearly visible location.
  2. Tag and hold someone else for more than 1 minute. You can bear hug them, hold their hands, link arms, anything!
  3. After sustaining contact, you can take one of their ribbons. If you aren't the character who initiated contact, you can't take a ribbon.
  4. Gather one of each god's ribbon in order to win a prize!

If you successfully manage to get all four ribbons, a little shower of confetti will burst from your ribbons and a nice little chunk of Dora will be transferred to your account. This can only work once unfortunately, but it's a nice little bonus for your first month in Havenwell! The party continues late into the night and the natives are happy to keep the party going as long as any of the offworlders wish to keep dancing.

As a reminder, please post your character to the Taken Character list and your own information to the Player Contact list as soon as possible. It helps us keep track of our player cap!

If you have any other questions, please ask them in the QUESTION thread below. Feel free to use the CR/Intro Meme to do OOC plotting. Otherwise, welcome to Hugtopia's first mingle log!

Having had his fill of strangely colored snacks, Kai had taken to doing what he usually did: hanging off to the side, watching people do their thing. He could probably get away with mingling amongst people here, if he wanted. No one knew him, after all. He just... didn’t really know how to do that. It didn’t feel right for him.

So it was kind of a surprise when he felt a tug on his clothes. Glancing down, it was even more of a surprise to see another little girl. Ah, he’d seen her dancing earlier, hadn’t he? Just how many little girls did they pull in to this place, anyway? And why were they so hard to say no to?

Just a bit confused about why this one had asked him of all people, Kai crouched down to be a bit more at her level. “Yeah, why not. Rin’s your name, right?”

[Keith chokes a bit, straightening up and setting his own coffee down.]

I..don't know what you're talking about.

[Play it cool, Keith, play it cool.]

He salutes and waves her off, and then uses that same hand to rub quickly over his face. Some people . . . she's not even thinking about the ribbons at all, only about making these machines happy . . .

It's not like she's the first person he's met like that, but it's still always something.

But when she's done, he's waiting for her by the door to escort her out, upbeat as ever.

"See? They just want us to play along! If you really don't want it, I'll take it off your hands."

People interested in answers often ask many questions. You never know what tidbit of information may unlock the solution to a mystery of life.

So there's a third type of magic user on your planet. I must say it's massively different than my own.

[He didn't do anything help, but he didn't complain about her continuing, either. All he wanted was to talk, and as long as she was dishing out information he was happy to let whatever she was doing be.]

Does your world have a name?

[Oh boy you said help, she's already happy to do so.]

I don't mind at all. So I just have to tell you something I didn't before? Or do you have to ask me a question?

((OOC: I am down for keeping it.))

Oh, it was the guy that was really helpful like Garry is. So there's now more of a smile on her face then fear.

"I was packing my things up again."

Boy that statement can lead to quite a few different paths of assumptions.

—Huh?

[Uh oh. With his face buried in his human ride's manly chest and all, Magolor hasn't exactly been paying as much attention to the surroundings as he maybe should be. He squirms to tip his head up and get a good look at what's coming. More chickens? It can't possibly be worse than that, can it?

Of course it is.

He has to struggle against the urge to just dimension-slip out of this guy's hands and leave him to fend for himself, but he can't actually maintain that for long enough to escape the entire flock—that's how he got into this mess in the first place! He should have tried something else! But it's too late now. Does this kid have anything up his sleeve?!

There's only one way to find out:]

Do you have a plan?!

That was a unique story. The imaginations of a child after experiencing a traumatic event?

"Though it seems safe at this moment, there is much we have yet to learn about this world. It would be negligent to leave a child alone."

At least he wasn't being forceful in his words, he was simply explaining in a calm, patient manner the issue with leaving her alone. "A guardian will see to it that you are properly fed, sheltered and kept secure."

A soul? I don't know. Maybe? That sounds like you're getting into religious territory, or maybe philosophy.

[You monster, there's practically a thousand by now. As long as he doesn't have to Pokérap them all..... He's not exactly a great artist, Verstael. If you want drawings, you'll probably get only marginally helpful doodles. He looks up at the Xatu circling overhead, a faint glitter of blue light briefly visible from beneath the edge of his mask; it soars off immediately, rising above the rooftops as it goes.]

A lot of people keep at least one Pokémon, so they're pretty common in most regions. I can't say how advanced we might be without knowing a little something about your world though, now can I? How about you, where are you from?

The fact that silver was such a rare commodity hadn’t been lost on Kai. He’d started to notice when he took to the sides and watched people flit to and fro that hardly any of the ribbons fluttering about shimmered in the same way at all. Maybe Rawna was a more selective god. Dragons were very discerning, he guessed. It was almost enough to make a guy feel a little special.

Almost.

What it really meant was that the interactions he had to look forward to were all because people saw nothing but the ribbon clipped to his sleeve. That’s what was happening right now, as Kai turned a steady stare at this ribbon prospector. At least he was frank about it!

“You could make a suggestion, sure.”

Her eyes somehow manage to get wider then they already normally are at the suggestion, though she doesn't even actually pause as she moves next to him so she can walk beside them as they head to the other temple. She hadn't thought about earning the ribbons and then giving them to others afterwards. It would mean she wouldn't have to say no to said ribbons and make someone else happy as well.

"Can we do that? Because if we can you definitely can have it."

Her enthusiasm over the idea just makes her seem happier then normal in that moment as she skips while avoiding robots milling about.

"I wonder if others would like them as gifts as well..."

I'm Magolor, from Halcandra—

[Wait though. This is the "truth about himself" he's going to grab another ribbon for, and he can't let this one dissolve too. Once is a funny story that was definitely totally an innocent slip, twice is downright suspicious. He can't claim to be from Halcandra like usual if Diacht's going to be picky.

Luckily, this is a really low-stakes truth to tell in this situation. What does a human care? They don't know better. But it still catches him up for that moment, and he has to backpedal.]

Weeeell, that's where I lived for a long time. Before that, I came from Another Dimension, and after that I became a traveler of the stars. I've been here, there, you name it!

[There, all true. He did it. Amazing!]

Maybe it's because I've met species of all types, but it's pretty brutal of humans to think only humans are people. I wonder what our hosts think about that? Hehehe.

"Who knows? I don't see why not. Let's test it out!"

He wonders if it might dissolve like his failed first ribbon attempt did, but hey, if it does, then she's only out a ribbon she didn't want anyway, and he's out one he already didn't have. It's worth it to test the limits here. But . . .

"Hmm, you really don't want a single one for yourself? You know there's a game coming up. You'll want to play, I bet. Don't go giving them all away!"

The shift of her expression unknowingly caused a shift in Kaito’s demeanor. There wasn’t any need to be on the defensive, be it because of an intruder or because he’d gone and scared a little girl. No, he could be loose and relaxed here.

Kai tilt his head to the side, lifting his brows a bit because boy howdy there was a lot to unpack here.

“Again, huh.”

"Oh, is that what Garry was when he promised to help me get out of the painting world, and when he made rules about our roses?"

She didn't really understand what guardian meant, especially in the context he was using, but she was getting an idea the more he spoke about such. Though the eating part was a still a question. Food hadn't been there really when they were trying to escape, though the candy he gave her might count in that regard.

"Was I meant to find one of those when I got here then mister? I don't think the robot people said that."

Also sharing the same temple as her, in the morning, Mu sometimes see the heron girl cleaning around the temples at the same time he's doing his share of cleaning duty.

Later in the afternoon when she was singing her songs for anyone to hear, Mu can hear her songs too. At times, he's playing music too, a wooden flute wherever he sits, to practice the music of his flute, and his songs can be heard in the temple for anyone passing by.

He wasn't trying to outbattle her with the songs of his flute, off-key and off-tune they are.

"It's probable, if he was someone who was looking out for you. I'm not certain why he would make rules about flowers, though."

Seemed an odd thing to do.

"The robots here are immortal. Perhaps they do not remember the difference between a child and an adult. Or it may not matter to them. Regardless, a child should have someone more experienced in the world to help guide them."

[Mu doesn't mind it since he figured the man just wanted to help and Mu was accustomed to aid strangers in their time of need. At his question, with a thoughtful look, making small talk.]

Hmm, not quite. I would say a spiritual path. Back home, I was trained with a colleague, and then eventually a young apprentice to be a follower of a Goddess. So when I woke up here, I wasn't surprised to align myself with Ainea.

It was called Earth. A lot of people who came here, it's a common world but it is home to many. And what of yourself? Do you come from Earth too?

[You’re a really cool guy, Magolor.]

Not anything good!

[Which was a 100% honest truth. Kai wasn’t exactly what one would call a “plans” kind of guy. He was capable of them, sure, but really he was kind of more of a “drop kick everything and figure it out later” kind of dude.

Dropkicking an entire herd of sheep wasn’t really a feasible option, but using all that power in his jumpy legs to leap across the flock? YEAH, SURE, WHY THE HELL NOT. So here was an extra squeeze around pillowolor as Kai revved up the metaphorical engines and gunned it with an honestly impressive leap.

There was height! There was distance! There were the soft behhhhs of sheep below them, and the dramatic drumming of BOK-BOK-BOK filling the air behind them! Wow! Wow!

Part of the “figuring it out later” thing was the fact that even if the feat itself was impressive, usually Kai ate shit on the way down. So. Have fun, everyone.]

She just nods, her expression relaxed as if she hadn't said anything at all odd with that phrasing.

"Garry said staying still was a bad idea in the painting world because some of the statues and paintings could break the walls or open doors."

Which somehow translated to her moving houses every couple of days

[ He still doesn't understand...

... But it's a lot like the shaken soda bottle concept; the tears have started, the remnants of anger and bitterness unleashed.

And, well... put simply? It's gonna be a while before he manages to get those tears under control. By the time he pulls back enough to wipe at his face, he is clearly not feeling much better, overall.

Of course, that's not to say a lot of the anger and bitterness haven't subsided. His expression might make that much clear, at least.

Oh... and the glasses sure are still on his face. He realizes that when he reaches up to wipe at his eyes, only to be left awkwardly lifting them to do so. There's an exhausted sigh as he looks away with a hint of shyness. ]
